E-Meditech is a U.S.-based non-profit that promotes health and education in Africa, particularly Cameroon and Uganda. Since 2003, CMMB has made regular shipments for E-Meditech to Cameroon and Liberia.
In 2008, CMMB has put together 12 shipments destined for E-Meditech’s Mamfe General Hospital in Cameroon and for surrounding clinics via medical mission teams. CMMB also has been helping medical mission teams travel to Mamfe Town three to four times each year offering medical, dental, and surgical care. The mode of transportation for both medicines and medical personnel is often less than ideal (see photo), but the quality of the care provided is nevertheless first-rate.
The 300-bed Mamfe General Hospital and one district clinic support the entire population of 50,000. Two physicians, ten nurses, seven technicians, five midwives, two pharmacists, and four maintenance employees at the hospital see patients with illnesses ranging from asthma and malnutrition to malaria and cholera.
The hospital receives only modest support from the Cameroon Ministry of Health. Therefore, healthcare facilities and the patient population depend on the regular shipments of medicines and medical supplies from CMMB that are hand-carried by medical mission team members with E-Meditech.
Recently, CMMB sent medicine from TEVA for the treatment of inflammation, hypertension, and infection, as well as Tylenol from McNeil Consumer Products. According to Joseph Egbe, Director of Programs for E-Meditech, “Medical treatment here is rudimentary. Simple medication like aspirin is always in short supply.” Egbe goes on to explain that emergency cases of accidents or serious illness are carried on bicycles or motorcycles from remote areas to the general hospital.
