A Brief History of Dr. Tom:
- He studied engineering at Brown University, where he was also an All American football player
- He joined CMMB two decades ago, serving on short and then longer term mission trips
- In 2008, he moved to Sudan to help run the Mother of Mercy Hospital, where he continues to serve as medical director (and only permanent surgeon)
- In 2015, he was named one of Time Magazine’s Most Influential People
- In 2017, he was named Aurora Prize laureate, a humanitarian prize of $1.1 million dollars, recognizing his selfless service to the people of the war-torn Nuba Mountains in Sudan
- He is the subject of the award-winning documentary, The Heart of Nuba(which is also Oscar-qualified)
- He is currently the chair of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative
