A Father at the Heart of Kitui’s Water System

Standing on the banks of the Nzeu River in Kenya during the dry season, it’s hard to believe that water ever flows between its banks. Sprawling in front of you is nothing more than sandy, hot terrain—or so it appears. But buried 13 feet below the sand is a precious new water tank that holds up to 100,000 liters of water, fed by a sand dam—an innovative solution in drought-prone regions—installed by CMMB with support from Procter & Gamble. In partnership with the Kitui County Government, CMMB planned and constructed an 18-mile pipeline water system, connecting over 7,700 people with safe water filtered through the sand dam.
Now, the county government employs community members to help maintain the extensive system, Richard, a dedicated father, was among the individuals selected to maintain it. CMMB is celebrating Richard for his dedication to fatherhood and to the people of Kitui County this Father’s Day, recognized on June 15 in the United States.
At the Heart of Kitui’s Water System
Not far from where the water tank is buried sits the water system’s control center—the heart of the entire operation. This small, two-room building, along with a modest solar panel grid, powers the entire pipeline. This is where you will find Richard, conducting daily service checks to ensure the pumps are operating properly and that the building is secure.
Richard told us that he enjoys having this responsibility and takes his role very seriously. The stipend he receives helps him provide for his family. Knowing that he directly contributes to his neighbors’ access to water makes his work feel impactful.
Richard remembers what it was like before the pipeline was installed and the stress that came every dry season. People resorted to digging in the barren riverbed, hoping to reach small pockets of water to scoop into buckets or jerrycans and carry home. The lack of reliable water had an impact on the health of livestock, too, which many in his community rely on to make a living.
For any loving father, Richard’s children are his first priority. Even with this job, he is always looking for additional opportunities. He pushes himself so that he can push his children ahead in life. And we have a feeling that nothing will keep him from this mission.
Happy Father’s Day to Richard—and to every father figure who puts his family first and leads with love.
