Hurricane Matthew made landfall on October 4th, bringing with it severe destruction. Thousands of homes were destroyed. Hundreds, possibly thousands of people are reported dead and the number is rising.
Our exhausted staff and volunteers are working frantically, day and night, to distribute household recovery kits, which provide families with crucial supplies such as food, water purifying tablets and hygiene supplies. These kits will help keep people alive and stave off the frightening possibility of a deadly cholera outbreak caused by drinking unclean water from damaged or destroyed water systems.
In the communities where we work, we’ve identified 6,000 families that need these kits in order to survive the coming weeks. Families like Olivine Milford’s, a mother of four pictured above with her youngest. They are lucky to be alive after a tree fell on their house during the storm. Huddled inside while Matthew raged, it wasn’t until they were able to go outside that the realized how close of a call they had. Now, the family is divided as they sleep at various neighbors. Olivine doesn’t know how she’s going to provide for her family in the short term, or if and how they will eventually rebuild.
A generous gift of $100 will buy a household recovery kit for a family of five. This kit provides:
- Water purification tablets, to prevent cholera
- Hygiene kits
- Household supplies
Please help today and help us meet our goal of saving 6,000 families.
