In today’s reading Jesus and his disciples observe the actions of the Jewish leaders and pilgrims at the Temple in Jerusalem. The leaders are seeking the attention and respect of the crowds. Jesus warns his disciples against this behavior.

Jesus says, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets.”

Next, Jesus turns his attention to the pilgrims who have traveled to the temple to make offerings. He observes wealthy people leaving great contributions to the temple. Among those wealthy people is a very poor widow. In comparison to the wealthy, the widow’s gift is very small. But, as Jesus points out, it is all that she has.

The lesson Jesus seeks to instill in all of his disciples shows that God does not measure the value of gifts in size or amount. God measures gifts based on the love and intention of those who give them.

Jesus says, “This poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.”

At CMMB, our donors understand the meaning of the gifts they make. Their inspiration to give comes from their love for all people and their intention to contribute to a better world.

In conclusion of today’s reflection, we will share the words of one of our very own donors, who’s inspiration to support CMMB exemplifies the true meaning of giving.

“Seeing so many children and families in need of help has made me realize that even the slightest of donations, if done with a pure heart and good will, and accompanied by prayer, can truly make a difference.”
