Listening with Open Hearts—Your Weekly Reflection

Last Sunday, we read the parable of the Good Samaritan. This week’s Gospel shifts the scene to Martha and Mary in the presence of Jesus. Together, these stories paint a fuller picture of discipleship. Martha and Mary both engage with Jesus. But while Martha serves Jesus as a guest in the home, Mary sits by his feet, listening instead. Not understanding Mary’s action, she questions Jesus. His response teaches us that discipleship is as much about listening, like Mary, as it is about responding, like the Good Samaritan.
At CMMB, we are called to both listen deeply to the needs of the communities we serve and respond with compassion and action. We have witnessed mothers walking miles to reach health facilities, health workers spending long days bringing care to remote villages, and partners joining together to deliver lifesaving medicines across the globe. Like Mary, we first listen; like the Good Samaritan, we then respond to ease the journey, support the delivery of care, and expand access.
In our faith, we will find there are no boundaries to the call. Our neighbors are not just those close to us, but anyone in need, no matter where they live or who they are. We embark on this new week listening. Jesus’ voice will find us in the people we serve. This week, may we open our hearts to listen for Christ’s voice in those we serve, ready to respond with love.
