It is hard to believe that we are approaching the final weeks of summer. We hope that you and your loved ones were able to enjoy some moments of rest. Rest can nourish. It can reignite our passions and refresh our commitments.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges a crowd of people to seek nourishment—not through the food they eat but through their faith.

Jesus says: “Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.”

The people converse with Jesus. They ask how they can “accomplish the works of God.” They ask for a sign so they might believe in Jesus. But Jesus continues to challenge them to reach for their faith—there they will find the answers.

Their discourse continues, until Jesus offers his parting words: “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

As you embark on these final weeks of summer, how will you nourish your spirit? Whether you seek it in a day off or find it in a quiet prayer, we are reminded today that it is not just our bodies that need nourishment but our mind and our spirit too.
