More About the Digital Health and Women Religious Initiative:

An Initiative in Capacity Building Among Women Religious in eHealth and mHealth in Kenya, South Sudan, Zambia, Haiti, Mexico and Peru

Health systems across the developing world are facing challenges to cope with the high burden of diseases against the backdrop of shortages of health care professionals, and inadequacies in medicines, medical supplies, funding, equipment and infrastructure, including Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs). And yet, technology comes with the promise to transform the provision of health services and the functioning of health systems.

The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, KPMG, and CMMB have decided to partner to build capacity and bring innovation in eHealth/mHealth (eHealth refers to “electronic health,” and mHealth refers to “mobile health” both of which amount to comprehensive digitization and distribution of health informatics and interventions) at:

1) an institutional level to a select group of Catholic health facilities

2) an individual level among a select group of women religious (i.e. Catholic sisters) who operate in those health facilities and systems in various roles of the health sciences.
In order to accomplish this goal, the Hilton Foundation and CMMB have agreed to a two-phased approach:

1) A landscape analysis in three African countries (Kenya, South Sudan, and Zambia), and three Latin American and Caribbean countries (Haiti, Mexico, and Peru) where CMMB has long standing relationships. The goal of the analysis is to understand the realities in the Catholic health systems of those countries and among the human resources employed in those systems in the area of eHealth/mHealth, identify gaps and opportunities for capacity building, and point out preferred program design options for implementation of a capacity building program;

2) An implementation phase – two capacity building initiatives will be undertaken—one for the three African countries, and another for the three Latin American and Caribbean countries.
