“She is clothed with strength and dignity, and laughs at the days to come.
She opens her mouth in wisdom; kindly instruction is on her tongue.”
—Proverbs 31: 25-26

At CMMB, we celebrate the mothers we serve today and every day. Even in moments of extreme hardship, these women display unwavering love, courage, and selflessness. Our mission, derived from our Catholic values, guides us to show compassion and support to women and children in a world where they often experience suffering. We believe that by helping to empower women to overcome the effects of poverty and poor health, they can live fuller and more productive lives – and so will their children, families, and communities.

As we honor mothers this Mother’s Day, our thoughts turn to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She gave birth to baby Jesus in the most difficult of circumstances, risking her own life to bring the son of God into the world, then raised him, and later watched Him die.

When Jesus said to John “behold your mother” in the scriptures, He forever solidified Mary’s role for all believers, making it possible for us to become Mary’s sons and daughters. He placed his mother under John’s care to show us the close bond that is possible between Mary and all believers. This reciprocal role highlights not only Mary’s universal motherhood but Jesus’ desire that John honor Mary in His absence. Inspired by Jesus, we look to honor Mary, embracing her motherhood which He left us as a gift.

“Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.”
—John 19: 25-27

Today we are reminded that through Mary we can find a natural extension of our own mother’s love, and in some cases, she can become the mother that we don’t have. No matter who we are or what position we hold in society, Mary’s care is extended to all. She is the perfect mother—never judging us, always supportive, always available. How fortunate we are to have someone who can give us this kind of love. We can always rely on her through prayers and meditation, whenever we need the love of a mother by our side.

“I am your merciful mother, to you, and to all the inhabitants on this land and all the rest who love me, invoke and confide in me.” —From the miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe

On Mother’s Day we honor those who fulfill the role of Mary, showing care, concern, nurturing, and compassion, often at great personal sacrifice. They will always be in our prayers.
