Becoming a Volunteer

Start by completing an online volunteer application. CMMB staff will review your application and schedule a personal interview if your background and skill set meet our needs. If accepted, all international volunteers also participate in 3 orientation calls prior to deployment.

Purpose of Mission Trip

The aim for mission trips to the Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan Center for Health (BJSH) is to continue to improve the quality of healthcare services provided to the Côtes-de-Fer community, while assessing opportunities for further development of hospital operations.

The medical mission team will include a multidisciplinary group of health professionals with extensive experience in the healthcare sector and interest in training and development of healthcare staff. They will driven by our mission to improve the lives of women and children in Côtes-de-Fer, Haiti. More focused team visits with a specific goal such as surgical trips, training or assessment are also organized, in line with needs previously identified by the Haiti team.

Length of Mission Trip

The medical mission trip is typically eight days long in Côtes-de-Fer, Haiti.

Financial Contribution

Mission trip volunteers are responsible for covering the cost of the trip, which typically totals around $1,800 per person, depending on dates and airfare rates.

CMMB is seeking dedicated professionals to contribute to our mission of improving global health.

Ideal candidates are over the age of 21, have a professional degree in a health-related field and possess the skills and experience relevant to working in low-resource settings. All clinical volunteers must possess a valid license to practice.  Other requirements may apply depending on the role or placement site.

Our international mission trip volunteers are required to:

• Contribute approximately US$1,800 to cover the cost of participating in the mission trip
• Attend 3 orientation calls before deployment to their volunteer placement site
• Share stories and photos from the field

Overview of Côtes-de-Fer

The Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan Center for Health (BJSH) is in Côtes-de-Fer. Located in Haiti’s South-East (Sud-Est) department, the community is situated on a beautiful coast. Life is much slower and more rural than in Port-au-Prince with livestock just as common on the roads as cars. The people in Côtes-de-Fer are very friendly and welcoming of foreigners even though very few speak a language besides Creole.

Many fishermen live in the surrounding area—making the seafood selection very good and very inexpensive. It is also a very poor community, where an overwhelming majority of the population is unemployed. Residents are widely dispersed along dirt roads and paths that crisscross the area’s mountainous terrain; for many, it’s a trek just to reach the village of Côtes-de-Fer.

Volunteer Accommodation

CMMB will provide accommodation to incoming medical mission trip volunteers in its 20 bed guest-house, located in Côtes-de-Fer and close to the site of the BSJH.

Volunteer Travel Arrangement

CMMB will arrange the roundtrip flight departing from the volunteer’s city of resident to Port-au-Prince, Haiti with a partnering travel agency that has extensive experience in booking flights to the developing world.
