My Carebear is the most loving person in the world. (But my dad gives her a run for her money though.)

How my mother has inspired me:

My mom works in a health center in the most under-served neighborhood in Boston. She is a talented nurse and worked for many years in one of the most prestigious hospitals in the United States. However, she was called to serve a population that too often does not get the care they need.

Most of her patients are immigrant children from northern Africa and Latin America. They leave their homes seeking political asylum, refuge, and a chance at a better life.

She taught me and my brother that you treat everyone the same, no matter where they come from, what they look like, or what language they speak.

What sets my mom apart is her compassion for people, especially mothers and children who need the extra support. She genuinely cares. Which is why my family and friends all refer to her as “Carebear.”
