On this second Sunday of Advent, our Gospel encourages us to continue our reflections on the important theme of preparation. But today, we do so in consideration of John the Baptist’s role in our faith.

John the Baptist appears in the desert, “proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.”

People from the city and countryside all came to see him. They acknowledged their sins and were baptized in the Jordan River.

John the Baptist said to them, “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

It’s here that we are once again presented with the idea of preparation. But for us at CMMB, as we consider this theme, we also consider John the Baptist and why his words hold so much meaning.

It’s much like a mother or father, a teacher or mentor. Why do we engage with their advice? Why do we find comfort in their words? In many cases, it’s because we trust them—we look up to them.

We will conclude today’s reflection by celebrating all those with whom we trust to help us deliver the promise of health. There are our partners, who we trust with our collaboration. There are the volunteers, who we trust as stewards of our programs. And there is all of you, our faithful followers and supporters, who share our trust and believe in our mission. Thank you, none of our lifesaving work would be possible without you.
