In today’s Gospel we read the final chapter of Jesus’ sermon on the plain. Told through a series of parables, Jesus seeks to teach his followers the true meaning of discipleship and how to achieve it.
In the first parable, Jesus poses a question to his followers. He asks, “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit?”
His question reveals an important element of discipleship: In order to teach others, we must first teach ourselves.
In his second parable, Jesus compares his disciples to the ripe fruit produced by a bountiful tree. He says, “For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles.”
Through these words, Jesus seeks to show that our actions define us. When we do good for others, it does not go unnoticed. The same is true for those who seek to harm or mistreat another.
But as we reflect on this lesson, it is important to remember that we continue to grow and change everyday. The mistakes we made as a child taught us how to carry ourselves successfully through adulthood. And there is always more to learn—about how we can best be true to God and ourselves.
As we prepare to enter the season of Lent, let us reflect on how we can continue to strengthen our discipleship in honor of Jesus’ resurrection. Lent is a journey, and we’ve made a special Lent calendar to guide you through the season, with beautiful reflections and important reminders that can help us act with intention and gratitude for Jesus. If you’re interested in journeying through the season alongside us, we encourage you to download our free Lent calendar by clicking HERE.
We will conclude this reflection with a quote from Mother Teresa, a guiding figure for us here at CMMB. Her words remind us that we will not be traveling alone.
“Remember that God is on the journey, too.” —Mother Teresa
