30th Sunday in Ordinary Time

In a world where injustice is endured by many, one where we can also be easily distracted by the day’s news or the struggles and successes of day-to-day life, Jesus reminds us of the most important of the commandments.

In today’s gospel reading, He instructs us:

“You shall love the Lord, your God,
with all your heart,
with all your soul,
and with all your mind.
This is the greatest and the first commandment.
The second is like it:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”
– Matthew 22: 34-40

This gospel is reflected along with the 1st reading from Exodus where the Hebrews fled Egypt when God first invoked the commandments. Loving God meant that they were to look after the poor, the sick, and all those who are vulnerable, especially those who were once refugees from their homeland, just as the Hebrews once were.

Pope Francis echoes the importance of tying the love of God to loving others, saying that there cannot be one without the other: “both of these go together… If you don’t follow one, you can’t follow the other; and if you follow one, you must follow the other.”

Thank you for being a part of our community where we express our love of God by loving our brothers and sisters around the world. We pray that our work together is a light in the world that shines with love and hopefulness.
