We join you on this third Sunday of Advent to continue our reflections on John the Baptist and his role in our faith. Today’s reading, which comes from the Gospel of John, reminds us that this is a season to rejoice in anticipation—with family, friends, and our shared faith.

In our Gospel, John the Baptist is confronted with questions about his identity.

John the Baptist says, “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘make straight the way of the Lord.’”

His words are met with more questions about his purpose. If he is not Christ, or a prophet, why then does he baptize? John explains, “I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.”

Through these words, John gives his readers a reason to rejoice in anticipation.

Earlier this week our global community came together to anticipate health for all through universal access to healthcare. Though we have a long journey ahead, International Universal Health Coverage Day, recognized annually on December 12, gives us an opportunity to rejoice in our shared commitment to achieve this reality.
