Mabel is a prime example of a CMMB trained community health worker that goes out of their way to ensure the betterment of members within a community. Mabel was concerned about a young man by the name of Akokwa, who was being treated for HIV; no visible progress was occurring the way she knew it was supposed to. Following her gut, Mabel furtively followed Akokwa home, which was hours away, to find that her instincts had been right—Akokwa was living in a situation that was stunting his treatment progression. Lack of food and denial from his relatives for a place to stay was harming Akokwa. With this information, Mabel enrolled him into the Kusamala Project. This project is now providing Akokwa with a stable, family-like environment along with support to obtain food and an education.

Mabel gave Akokwa her attention and care, which led to him getting placed in a much better situation. Mabel’s commitment and dedication to the community in which she serves fostered the betterment of a young man. Mabel serves as an example that part of being a community health worker simply involves showing the families you work with that you care and will (literally) go the extra mile for them.
