The Good Shepherd’s voice and a mother’s love

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus speaks words of comfort: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” As the Good Shepherd, Jesus symbolizes deep love and promised protection. His voice is one of reassurance and trusted direction.
Today, in the US and other parts of the world, we celebrate others whose fierce protection and unwavering love echo that of the Good Shepherd: the mother figures in our lives. Whether by relationship, role, or spirit, they are often our first experience of love. With tenderness, they lead us; with quiet strength, they protect us—even in life’s most uncertain moments.
In the rural communities where we serve, mothers walk miles to bring their children to a health facility when sick. Mothers commit themselves to learn new health practices that protect the health of their families. Mothers show extraordinary resilience in the face of crisis. We are honored to walk alongside them and support their journeys.
As we open our hearts to the love of the Good Shepherd, may we also pause to recognize the mothers and caregivers who have shaped our lives. At CMMB, it is a moment to recommit ourselves to honoring that love by serving others with the same resilience and devotion.
