As Christians, we believe with certainty that Jesus is the Son of God.  Our faith is based on evidence in scripture, the Church’s teachings, and supported by other people of faith.

However, the journey of faith can include moments of doubt as well as certainty.  It’s hard to know what God’s plan for us really is and to have faith in His plan, rather than what we imagine.  Ruth (pictured above) was born with an intellectual disability.  She is among the most vulnerable people in her community in rural Kenya.  When she was younger, Ruth was sexually assaulted and became pregnant.  It’s pretty certain that no one in her community thought she would ever become a mother.  Abuse like this can make us question how God can allow such terrible things to happen to the innocent.

Ruth gave birth to a healthy son.  Mother and child are completely devoted to one another.  As Ruth’s son grows up, he is able to take more and more care of his mother.  It’s an act of faith to believe that everything in Ruth’s life – the bad and the good – was part of His plan.  His gift of love to them both seems perfectly clear.

In today’s Gospel, we hear about the Transfiguration, a time when Jesus was revealed to his disciples as the Son of God by a voice from heaven.  They didn’t really understand what they saw, yet they had faith and believed.

Together, let’s ask God to help us have great faith in Him in all the moments of our lives – especially in those moments when we feel the most doubt.
