Volunteer Position: Medical Student in Sudan

Service Period: January – April 2023

Background: Phifer will be joining Dr. Tom Catena at the Mother of Mercy Hospital in Sudan for three Months to follow his passion and educational development. Phifer has felt a calling for service and has spent 18 months living in the West Bank. During his time here he completed his undergraduate studies and taught English as a second language as part of a Lutheran Church. After finding out about Dr. Tom Catena, Phifer was inspired to go into medicine and is now in his third year of studies at Duke University. He will support Mother of Mercy Hospital alongside his own research, which will have focus on medical ethics and health equity.
