Today’s Gospel begins with Jesus and his disciples’ journey to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. During their travels, Jesus poses a question: “Who do people say that I am?”

His disciples explain that some believe Jesus to be John the Baptist, others Elijah or one of the prophets. Jesus then directs the same question to his disciples, to which Peter responds: “You are the Christ.”

The remainder of today’s Gospel is powerful and rooted in Jesus’ identity. In it, Jesus reveals the sacrifice he must make for his ministry. Peter fervently rejects this prediction. But Jesus proceeds, alluding to what his sacrifice means for salvation.

What does Jesus’ identity mean to you? As Peter recognizes, Jesus is the Christ. But he is also the savior, healer, teacher, friend, and brother. Each piece is essential to our understanding of who Jesus is and his mission.
