On this fourth Sunday of Easter, also called Good Shepherd Sunday, our reading comes from the tenth chapter of John’s Gospel.

In the section we read from today, Jesus calls himself the good shepherd. He describes a scenario in which a wolf comes to attack a flock of sheep that is guarded by a paid shepherd. Frightened by the wolf, the paid shepherd abandons his sheep. In the same scenario, Jesus, the good shepherd, lays down his life for the flock—an act of pure love.

When Jesus calls himself the good shepherd, he proclaims his love for his followers. He has the power to lay down his life for us—and to take it back up again.

Today, we continue Jesus’ mission as the good shepherd by finding ways to act out of love for others, no matter how big or small.

Last month, we recognized World Water Day to raise awareness and stand in solidarity with the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe drinking water. In partnership with CMMB x Hunter—a student-led organization that supports CMMB’s mission—we proposed a challenge to our community. In order to stand in solidarity with the women and children around the world who walk miles every day to gather safe water, we challenged our community to simulate the experience.

As part of the #ACT4Water campaign, students walked 5km, donated $5 to bring safe drinking water to communities in need, and challenged friends and family to do the same.

We will conclude today’s reflection with the word’s of CMMB’s Rachel Penner, who reminds us that every action, no matter how small, has impact.

“Participating, taking part, and engaging in a small way is significant because collectively we can make a big difference,” said Rachel.
