Harry Kpoh is involved in an array of philanthropies between the U.S. and Liberia, including leading the Trembo National Association for Development, a Medical Donations Program partner.
Originally from Liberia, Harry left the country with his wife and his three sons following the second Liberian Civil War in 2003. They settled in Louisville, Kentucky, where a large expatriate community of Liberians resides. He immediately began volunteering for the Liberian Community of Kentucky and Southern Indiana, a group that helps newly arrived Liberians integrate into the U.S., assisting with finding employment, adjusting to a new environment, and finding work. He also co-founded the African Heritage Festival, which brings together thousands of African and Caribbean citizens in the area to celebrate their culture.
Liberia has an extremely under-resourced health system, and two consecutive civil wars, ongoing economic stagnation, and the Ebola crisis have all served to exacerbate the problem. Harry saw that poor health would continue to be an obstacle to the people of Liberia growing and developing their nation. This inspired him to start the Trembo National Association of the Americas. The group works with health networks in the Louisville area as well as donor NGOs to put together biannual containers of medicines, supplies, and medical equipment to ship to Liberia.
Once the container arrives, Harry travels to the country to work with local Ministry of Health partners and oversee the allocations to a network of six health centers serving over 16,000 patients. He prizes building local capacity and giving ownership to the beneficiaries of the donations, knowing that real change comes from helping people to decide their own way forward. You can read more here about CMMB’s work with Trembo. In 2021, UPS—where Harry works as a supervisor of global logistics and distribution e-fulfillment— recognized him with the James E. Casey Award. The James E. Casey Award was founded in 1995 to celebrate UPS staff who embrace the company’s legacy of volunteerism and community service. You can read more here about the award.
With his tireless work ethic, and ability to bring people together for a common cause, there is no telling what Harry is going to accomplish. CMMB looks forward to collaborating with him on a continuing mission to help the people of Libera.
