“Do not be afraid; just have faith.” Your Weekly Reflection
In today’s Gospel, we read about two of the miracles Jesus performed. Through both these acts, Jesus praises faith and restores health.
Our reading begins as Jesus is approached by a father named Jairus. His daughter is sick, and he makes a plea for Jesus’ help. “Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live,” says Jairus.
Jesus recognizes this act of faith and follows Jairus through a crowd towards his home. It’s here that we witness the first miracle. A woman, also suffering and sick, reaches out and touches Jesus as he walks. She is immediately healed. Jesus surveys the crowd, demanding to know who has touched him. Instead of hiding, the woman steps forward.
This too, Jesus recognizes as an act of faith. “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction,” says Jesus.
Just after this event, a man finds Jairus in the crowd with news that his daughter has passed—they did not make it home in time. Still, Jesus continues towards the house. Here, the second miracle occurs. Jesus enters the room where the young girl lies, takes her hand, and says, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” And she does.
Jesus asks that Jairus tell no one of the miracle that just occurred—so that others may find their faith on their own.
CMMB’s relationship with Jesus and his healing ministry spans more than a century. Our founder, Dr. Paluel Joseph Flagg, tragically lost both his newborn daughter and wife within the same year. He found comfort amid incredible grief through service. Dr. Flagg followed Jesus’ healing ministry and so too does his legacy at CMMB today.
