This Easter season was marked by the appearance of the Pope in Vatican square despite his declining health, and then we awoke on Monday to learn of his death. At CMMB, we mourn the loss of a leader who was a champion of the poor and the sick, embracing people who were too often forgotten.  He led the church and the global community, reminding us to take care of each other, including the least of our brethren.

As the CEO of CMMB, I pray to emulate the example of humble commitment to serve all of God’s children embodied by the “People’s Pope.” Our work brings us to the places where the road just stops. Health workers trained by CMMB walk to the households off the road where they care for their neighbors.    It isn’t an easy mandate, but I have met these health workers, and they carry out their work so joyfully.    In a way, I have as much to learn from them about humble service to the poor as I can learn from leaders like Pope Francis.

Easter is a hopeful season where we mark the triumph of love over fear and light over dark.    I feel that much of our work is bringing that hope and change to many communities who need medicine, health care, and clean water to live a better life.   Among the many quotes from Pope Francis that speak to me is one from his autobiography, “HOPE.”

“We must not stumble upon tomorrow, we must build it, and we all have the responsibility to the project of God, which is none other than the happiness of mankind, the centrality of mankind, without excluding anyone.”

That’s what I see CMMB doing every day—working to build the health and happiness of communities, and bringing hope and healing where it was lost.   I join you and many around the world praying for Pope Francis and the peace promised to humble servants upon death.
