A Source of Healing and Hope in Kitui County, Kenya
Joshua is a pastor in rural Kitui County, Kenya. For too long, he watched his people suffer without reliable access to healthcare. The unthinkable deaths of pregnant women due to unaddressed birth complications pushed him to become a community health worker—and a source of healing and hope.
The daily journey
The role of a community health worker is no small task. Joshua travels miles every day to reach families at home. Trained by CMMB and the local ministry of health, he spends hours providing basic care and promoting healthy practices to those in the 261 homes he is responsible for.
Joshua used to make the journey on foot, struggling with the knowledge that he could not reach everyone who needed him—could not reach every pregnant woman and new mother who needed his support. In his community, it is common for a woman to go through her pregnancy without any antenatal care. Sometimes, the distance and lack of transportation to the nearest health facility make it impossible. If not the distance, it is the limited exposure to the importance of antenatal care.
Everything changed when CMMB and partners provided each community health workers in Joshua’s region with a specially engineered, all-terrain bicycle.
“The bicycle has given me newfound energy,” said Joshua.
Hope delivered
With the bike, he spends less time traveling and more time with the community members he serves. It also allows him to stay well-equipped during his journey, carrying needed medical supplies and teaching aids.
