“Zambia in rural areas requires a bit of involvement. We had to get our mind and soul into it, and walk the streets with the people and understand how they live.”

Zambia is a country with both extreme natural beauty and extreme poverty. Our country office is located in the country’s capital, Lusaka. Our CHAMPS initiative (Children And Mothers Partnerships) in Zambia serves women, children and families in rural Mwandi, an area in the southwest of the country. BD has been a hands-on partner at the Mwandi Mission Hospital with us for more than 10 years.

In October, Itumeleng “Tumi” Mathe, BD Global Health & Maternal/Newborn Health Leader, Africa was one of several corporate partners who witnessed CMMB programs in action during an Immersion Week in Zambia. By observing our programs first-hand, cross-sector partners from US-based health systems, corporations, and major pharmaceutical companies had the opportunity to engage more deeply in global health and development issues. Our Immersion Week in Zambia brought partners to program sites in Lusaka and its surrounding areas, as well as Mwandi.

We asked Tumi to talk about his Immersion Week experience in Zambia. Thank you for your support, Tumi!
