When Shalin returned to the Kitui County Referral Hospital four months after giving birth, her baby boy, Daylan, was tucked into her chest and peacefully asleep. Snuggled up to his mother with a plush blue hat atop his head, it is hard to believe that Daylan’s arrival in this world was anything but peaceful.

The truth is that Daylan may not have survived had the hospital’s Newborn Unit not been there.

When Shalin was pregnant with Daylan, she was injured in a serious car accident on the way to work. She was rushed to the Kitui County Referral Hospital, where doctors determined she needed an emergency C-section.

As a result, Daylan was born too small. With his low birthweight of 4.5 pounds, he needed the specialized care now available at the Little Angel’s Newborn Unit.

“I was scared so much because my baby was very small,” Shalin said

he team that keeps the unit running with efficiency and compassion has provided lifesaving care to 788 newborns since it opened, just months prior to Daylan’s birth.

Daylan spent a month under the watch of the healthcare workers responsible for not only the exceptional care provided at the unit but also its hopeful and calming energy.

“The nurses here are very smart and supportive,” she said. “I am happy because they helped him so much.”

Today, both mom and baby are healthy and approaching another checkup in April.
