On this fourth Sunday of Lent, or Laetare Sunday, we will explore the theme of Jesus as our savior. Today’s reading comes from chapter three of John’s Gospel.

Our reading begins as Jesus concludes his conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee who had come to Jesus in the night. Jesus tells him, “And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”

His words are in reference to an event that took place in the desert, where Moses cured Israelites who had repented for their sins. But Jesus takes it a step further with his mention of the Son of Man. We understand his words today as a prediction of his death and resurrection.

In the next part of the Gospel, John shares his own reflection on the meaning behind Jesus’ words. He describes Jesus to us as the light that came to save the world. Through his light, he exposed our sins.

Our tendency might be to hide from the light because our sins are difficult to face. But when we accept the light and ask for forgiveness of our sins, we are saved. This is why Jesus came to us—and this is a reason to be joyous.

As we embrace joy during a season that has much to do with sacrifice, we are reminded of an interview we recently had with our CHAMPS coordinator in Zambia, Mwauluka.

Mwauluka in Zambia

Mwauluka grew up surrounded by poverty, but he embraced an opportunity to rise above. Today, it’s his goal to show others how they can do the same.

“My focus is to ensure that people who are vulnerable are given the chance to have a better life, just like I was. I was neglected, but God was faithful enough to bring me to where I am today. It is my aspiration to help people the way God has helped me. Let me be a ladder for those who cross my path—that is my focus.” – Mwauluka

We are blessed to have people like Mwauluka supporting our mission in the field. For from his daily sacrifice to serve, Mwauluka finds joy. If you are interested in reading more about Mwauluka’s story, you can do so by visiting our blog.

In grace and peace,
