During the season of Lent, we continue to reflect on our role in Jesus’ mission. Today’s Gospel encourages us to do the very same, in relation to how we react to the actions of others—especially when we don’t understand them.

In today’s reading, Jesus refuses to pass judgment on a woman who has sinned greatly. Under the pressure of Jewish leaders to put her to death, he surprises them and declares that the one who is free of sin should throw the first stone.

In doing so, he turns the tables. Not even the Jewish leaders can say they are completely free of sin.

It’s in this way that Jesus reminds us: It is not our role to pass judgment on others. Only Jesus knows the true challenges and circumstances another faces. Our role is to teach, guide, and show others the beauty in Jesus’ mission.

For those lucky enough to live in a place where resources are abundant and opportunities accessible, it can be difficult to understand the true challenges of the people we serve. In rural, isolated communities where resources are scarce, it’s not uncommon for a child to become critically ill from drinking contaminated water.

At the end of the day, these decisions are not made out of choice but out of necessity. At CMMB, we are working hard to make sure that no child lacks access to water—because clean water saves lives.

In 2021, CMMB increased access to safe water for over 260,000 people. Our support included water source construction and maintenance, treatment resources, latrine construction and much more.
