The Feast of the Epiphany: Your Weekly Catholic Reflection
Today’s Gospel reading tells the story of the three Magi. Matthew’s Gospel is the only one that describes the visit of the “three kings.” The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas is thought by some to be rooted in these first gifts to the infant Jesus. Gold, frankincense, and myrrh have become known as symbols of Christ’s royalty, divinity, and eventual death. They are special because in giving them, the Magi acknowledged who Jesus was to be: our Savior.
The word Epiphany means “a sudden perception or insight into the essential meaning of something, usually initiated by some simple, commonplace occurrence.” Darryl, a member of our CMMB community, recently had such an experience. Darryl came across Kevin (pictured above) and his story on our website. For a long time, Darryl had known that he wanted to make a difference in the world, but he wasn’t sure how. He was moved by Kevin’s poverty and had an epiphany: Darryl would make a year-long commitment to support Kevin with food and safe water by becoming the child’s Angel Investor. We launched the Angel Investor program to connect people just like Kevin and Darryl. Darryl’s personal epiphany has meant the priceless gift of a healthier life for Kevin.
During today’s feast of the Epiphany, we celebrate the fact that Jesus is revealed to the world. We also remember that much like the Magi and our friend Darryl, we too are on a journey, searching for Jesus each day. Please join us as we humbly pray for the grace to acknowledge the love of Jesus in our own lives, and to share His love through all that we do and say.
